The very last of 2019

As I was unable to continue with my Imperial Guard due to running out of desert yellow spray this eldar proto-guardian gets to be the last miniature I complete this year. Returning to work after holidays tomorrow I seriously doubt being able to painting anything more before the year changes.

This chap got the same red, white and metal scheme as the few eldar I´ve painted before. He´s actually a standard bearer model and I even have the back mounted banner pole for him but decided not to use that yet.

Shuriken catapult with chain blade. That must be one heavy gun to handle. Armor is mephisto red shaded with agrax and then washed with bloodletter. Highlights with go fasta red.

Some leathery pouches on the backside. The large knob for standard pole is quite visible.

Desert rats

Or ratlings to be precise. Big feet and big guns. Most of these chaps have been presented here before so now it´s just a group photo of the completed squad. These are very nice models with sharp details and good faces. Even a mediocre painter like mhyself can make them look pretty decent quite easily.

That all five of them. The last one to be completed is the kneeling one on the right.

Happy holidays to my readers! I might be that at current painting and blogging pace the next update is in 2020.

Get your men... er... squad into position sergeant!

So again a month since the previous posting. My rate of painting and blogging has been terribly slow as of lately. Let´s hope that the upcoming Christmas holiday will remedy that.

In any case here´s the Bravo company head commissar model I´ve been working on for some time now. It´s been close to ready for a while but due to post offive workers strike here in Finland some bitz I needed to complete it were stuck some post warehouse for four weeks.

As you can see it´s a bit of a kitbash of oldhammer and more modern parts. The commissar himself has been modified just a little to make it look like he has stopped his bike and is keeping it standing with his left foot. His right hand was bent a bit too.

I got the bike without fairings and gear shift lever. Those were replaced with modern plastics. I even added that single big headlight as someone in Facebook suggested. I´m pretty happy with how the bike look now.

"You heard the commissar! Move it lads!"

I´ll be building and painting another bike soon as that commissar need to be attached to an officer.

Missing a couple of parts but I think you get the idea.

Ratlings

Oh my... It´s been over a months since my last posting. Sometimes real life just gets in the way of hobbying. So I quite effectively skipped orctober - got one Ruglud´s trooper painted for that. Trying to get back into business with these IG Ratlings. Still two short of a squad but at least there´s something to prove I´m not finished yet.

Two snipers and a squad leader by the stripes he wears on his coat.

I general I suck at painting eyes but with these I´ve had at least some luck. They do look decent.

So two more and I can add this abhuman squad to my growing IG army.

...99th...100th!!!

This very short posting was done for one reason - the fact that there are now 100 models in the IG Bravo Company I´ve been building. I know - it´s orctober and I should be painting green skins but could not resist the temptation to get the force up to a three digit number.

A devastator trooper with missile launcher is #99 and my first ratling got the honor to be the 100th model in this company.
A closer look at the small chap. For once I got the eyes done pretty well.

How does one control a RT era IG Land Speeder?

There´s a strange little difference between the marine and IG Land Speeders of RT era.The marine driver seems to have both hands on controls while the rider is just riding along. And perhaps operating the weapon systems. But the IG crew is different. The driver has his right hand on a stick and the rider is using some sort of controls that looks like throttle with his left hand.

If we assume that a land speeder works like a light air craft then pitch and roll controlled with a stick. And speed/power with a throttle lever. In the marine speeder the logical set up could be that the pilot has the stick in his right hand and on the left side is the throttle. A pretty believable system.

But that IG speeder is a strange one. It would require one very skilled crew in my opinion to hand a system where one crew member controlls the stick and the other one the throttle.

And who uses those speeder weapons systems in that IG set up?

Even the fluff pictures show that IG uses two pilots while for marines the driver has all the controlls. And that top weapon is clearly steerable.

Here´s my desert scheme IG land speeder. The crew has a Judge Dredd wibe with those big visors of theirs.

Not much painting this september. Let´s hope orctober will be better...

Ogryn squad with #paintabob participant

Now with the #paintabob challenge started I went ahead to finish this ogryn squad. The other four were completed earlier and some have been presented here before. Of the three Bob Olley ogryns I have I chose this one to be my #paintabob entrant.

My #paintabob entrant. Black armor, desert camo pants, some metal for chain mail and codpiece.

The first ogryn I painted. No codpiece in sight which is strange given it´s an Olley sculpt.

And there´s that codpiece again. This sergeant is one of my favourite Olleys. Really cool model.

Filling the ranks is this Marauder MM42/2 ogre with a Huge blade.

Not exactly an oldhammer model but I wanted to have a standard bearer and felt that this chaps weapon tied him together with that Marauder model above.

And here´s the whole group together. Handsome chaps aren´t they :D

2nd Goblin Chariot

This one is a bit of a medley. I got most of the parts used here in a job lot I bought, some parts came from my bits box and other from eBay.

The whip toting driver is from the MD1 Goblin King´s Chariot set. The archer one is a goblin wolf rider whom I got without a mount.

Chariot itself is MD6 Goblin Battle Chariot with spear chariot sides. I got it without wheels and used some plastic ones (from 90´s Tiranoc chariot I think) as replacement. Some drilling and glueing was required to fit those scythes. The wolves are from that MD6 set too.

Here´s my other goblin chariot. More pics in this posting.

Some Scenery pieces

As I´ve understood one of the most oldhammery things around is making scenery from scrap. I´ve been wanting to give it a try for some time now and this week I finally got myself to do it. Here are the first few pieces I´ve thrown together. More will surely follow.

Pea sous can used as an oil tank or something. White base, Nihlakh Oxide on that, sprayed with
rust effect paint. Some highlights with orange and yellow. Dark shade for leaking stuff. A couple
of Tau bits to add some variety to the form.

Good stuff for an inpatient painter like me. Leaves a nice rough surface.

Some rusty pipes made out of plastic soda straws. Same method as above.

More pipes but this time with a sheet of corrugated metal.

Metal fence. Going to make a few more of these.
With some variety to desing of course.

That same fence from other side.

These should go pretty nicely with my desert themed IG. Now I just need more!

Heavy support

As per rules RT era IG support weapons must be crewed by tactical squads, assault squads, Adeptus Mechanicus or servitors. As I do not want to invest in a seperate squad to man the support weapons I intend to use the servitors I have in that role. Because of their cybernetic enhancements each servitor count as two crewmen.

The first support weapon of Bravo Company is this twin multi melta armed Tarantula. The equipment profile in rules for Tarantula gives las cannon as the only weapon option but won´t let that bother me. And I like the fact that my 2nd Tactical Platoon has multi meltas as heavy weapons too. Supported by this Tarantule they propably are the anti-tank detachment of the Company.

Pretty simple paint job: Desert yellow spray for base, black for body and metal for
guns. Light shading with Agrax and the highlights with diluted  Kislev Flesh.

A little bit of red, green and yellow to bring out some details. The servitor

RopeCon 2019 visit report

Yesterday I had the opportunity to visit RopeCon in Helsinki. Ropecon is not an oldhammer happening but as there was a lot of miniatures gaming related program I wanted to go and see what people are playing and painting these days. The event lasts the whole weekend and the main day is saturday. That+s why some of the tables were still empty on friday and for example some of the painting competition participants had not submitted their works by the time I had to leave. And most of the tournaments (WH40k, 9th age, BB etc.) had not started yet.

There was a lot of RPG, miniatures gaming, board gaming and LARP related events going on. Medieval dance lessons, gaming demos, miniature painting workshop, panel discussions and LARP props workshop just to mention a few. I even saw a 17th century style drill with 5 meter larch pikes.

I concentrated on miniatures gaming tables and related stuff. Here´s some pictures I took during the afternoon I spent at the RopeCon 2019.

Epic: Armageddon demo table armies:

Massive fleets on Battlefleet Gothic table:

A beautiful western village for Dead Man´s Hand system:

Atalantes (Greek looking guys) face what I think were Albainn (norseish chaps with monsters) on this table that demoed Darklands system:

Suberb Mordheim scenery:

Painting competions entrants:

 Single models

 New Slambo

Necromunda gang

 A hatching dragon

 Mordheim gang

 Doomwheel diorama

Some really big chaps there

At the painting table there were models, paints, brushes and help available for anyone who just wanted to step in and throw some paint on plastic (no metal models available). Wanted to sit down for a couple of minutes and speed painted this gobbo. The light there was a bit too little for my ageing eyes but he turned out okay. And I had a lovely chat with the guys running to table. Thank you! Keep up the good work.

There was a lot of market stall selling all thing gaming related. These 90´s blisters were perhaps the closest thing to Oldhammer that I encountered:

A really enjoyable afternoon. Maybe next year I´ll get myself to arrange an Oldhammer demo table there....
